What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry procedure in which we will apply a highly effective yet safe bleaching agent on your teeth to remove adherent stains. Teeth whitening is among the most commonly performed and sought-after cosmetic dental procedures worldwide. According to an estimate, 22% of Australian adults have had their teeth whitened this year.

Who Can Benefit from Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is an excellent procedure for anyone who has teeth stains. Some of the stains that can be effectively removed with this procedure are:
Teeth whitening is effective for remaining external stains on the dental enamel. However, teeth stains that develop within the tooth structure must be removed through internal teeth whitening. Similarly, teeth stains that develop during tooth development, such as tetracycline-induced stains, are permanent and cannot be removed through bleaching. The only option to treat such cases is by masking them cosmetically through porcelain veneers or crowns.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

The active ingredient in teeth whitening formulas is a bleaching agent, usually carbamide peroxide. This compound rapidly breaks down in hydrogen peroxide upon exposure to light, which penetrates beneath the tooth surface and chemically removes the adherent stains.

Teeth Whitening Procedure

Teeth whitening procedure is typically completed in under one hour. We will make impressions of your teeth at the first appointment to prepare custom whitening trays. At the next appointment, we will apply a protective agent, such as cocoa butter or vaseline, on your teeth to prevent your gums, cheeks, or lips from accidental bleaching. Next, we will ask you to wear the whitening trays filled with the bleaching agent. The bleaching agent will then be activated using a special light. The trays will be removed after 30-60 minutes. Afterwards, you will feel a considerable reduction in the shade of your teeth. The whitening procedure may need to be repeated for some patients with very heavy teeth stains. However, a single teeth whitening sitting can typically lighten your teeth by 2-3 shades.
Many think that teeth whitening may not be safe for our teeth since it uses a concentrated bleaching agent. But the fact is that teeth whitening is safe for your teeth, providing a qualified and experienced dentist does it.
